Artist Statement
My work is driven by my love and curiosity for the natural world. My journey began years ago when I went scuba diving for the first time, where I found myself entranced by the vibrant tapestry of life unfolding beneath the ocean's surface. Many of us, especially those who live inland, rarely get to experience this, which is also why many of us haven’t directly seen the state of our oceans with our own eyes.
In my paintings, I weave coral reefs and marine life onto figures, using vibrant colors to highlight the beauty of the ocean. The focus of my narrative centers on corals, which play a critical role in our lives. We depend on corals for food, protection from storm surges, development of new medicine, and more while 25% of life in the ocean depend on corals for shelter, breeding, and food. Through my paintings, I aim to highlight our connection to these creatures and raise awareness about their vital importance in our lives and the planet.
My paintings are created with water-mixable oil paints in an effort to replace harsh solvents and mineral spirits that are harmful to the environment.
Biography
Kim Bicknese is an oil painter based in Atlanta, GA with a passion for nature and the environment. After scuba diving for the first time in 2016, she was captivated by the bustling life in the ocean as well as it's fragility. The beauty of earth, both on land and under the seas, inspires her colorful paintings. Her goal is to shine a light artistically on how we’re connected with the earth and directly affect its health.
She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Art at Valdosta State University in 2014, where she focused more on digital illustrations created in Photoshop while dabbling in other mediums such as painting, print-making, and sculpture. She became a Product Designer for a tech startup after graduating, occasionally creating art with charcoal and pens whenever she had the time.
In 2022, Kim felt inspired to reconnect with oil painting after her boyfriend (now fiancé) had gifted her a new easel to paint on. It had been eight years since she last touched oils, so starting again wasn't easy. But she came to love the mindfulness that came with painting. She later switched to water-mixable oil paints to replace harsh solvents and mineral spirits.
Outside of the studio and her day job, Kim enjoys hiking, rock climbing, scuba diving, and traveling the world with her fiancé, John.
